The last generation, 2002-2008 BMW 7 Series, employing BMW's first attempt at what the German luxury car company calls "Flame Surfacing" under the direction of BMW design director Chris Bangle, was loved by some and much maligned by most others for its "unique" design direction. The new 2009 BMW 7 Series does away with some of the more controversial features in the name of a cleaner, more streamlined design.
